USD/JPY Pip Value: Complete Calculation Guide

USD/JPY is the second most traded currency pair in the world. Unlike EUR/USD or GBP/USD, yen pairs use a different pip size – 0.01 instead of 0.0001. This guide explains exactly how to calculate pip values for USD/JPY with real examples.

Why USD/JPY Pip Size is Different

The Japanese yen is worth much less than the US dollar. One US dollar equals approximately 150 yen. If USD/JPY used 0.0001 as a pip, the smallest price movement would be 0.0001 × 150 yen = 0.015 yen – too small to be practical. Brokers use 0.01 instead, which represents one full yen cent.

The Formula for USD/JPY Pip Value

(Lot Size × 0.01) ÷ Current USD/JPY Rate = Pip Value in USD

Unlike most pairs, USD/JPY requires division by the exchange rate even when your account is in USD. This is because the quote currency is JPY, not USD.

Example 1: Standard Lot with USD Account

Lot size: 1.00 (100,000 units)
Current USD/JPY rate: 148.50
Calculation: (100,000 × 0.01) ÷ 148.50 = 1,000 ÷ 148.50 = $6.73 per pip

Each pip movement on one standard lot of USD/JPY costs $6.73, not $10 like EUR/USD.

Example 2: Mini Lot with USD Account

Lot size: 0.10 (10,000 units)
Current USD/JPY rate: 148.50
Calculation: (10,000 × 0.01) ÷ 148.50 = 100 ÷ 148.50 = $0.67 per pip

Example 3: Different Account Currency

What if your account is in euros? First calculate pip value in USD, then convert to euros using EUR/USD rate.

Same trade: 1.00 lot USD/JPY, rate 148.50, EUR/USD rate 1.0950
Pip value in USD: $6.73
Pip value in EUR: 6.73 ÷ 1.0950 = €6.15 per pip

Why Pip Value Changes with USD/JPY

Unlike EUR/USD where pip value is constant ($10 per standard lot), USD/JPY pip value fluctuates as the exchange rate changes. When USD/JPY rises (dollar strengthens), your pip value decreases. When USD/JPY falls (dollar weakens), your pip value increases.

Example:
At USD/JPY 140.00: Pip value = $7.14 per standard lot
At USD/JPY 150.00: Pip value = $6.67 per standard lot
At USD/JPY 160.00: Pip value = $6.25 per standard lot

Always recalculate pip values when USD/JPY moves significantly. A 10% change in the exchange rate changes your pip value by nearly 10% as well.

Practical Risk Management for USD/JPY

Because pip values are smaller than major euro pairs, you can trade slightly larger positions for the same dollar risk. With a $10,000 account, 1% risk ($100), and a 20-pip stop loss:

Common Mistakes

Using 0.0001 instead of 0.01: This gives you a pip value that is 100 times too small. A beginner might think they are risking $0.10 per pip when they are actually risking $10 per pip – a costly error.

Forgetting to divide by exchange rate: If you calculate (Lot × 0.01) without dividing, you get the pip value in yen, not dollars. You must convert to your account currency.
